This week I’m thinking about when the little baby Jesus was teething. Did Mary and Joseph give little baby Jesus a wet rag to chew on? Did little baby Jesus take naps when his sad little gums hurt? Little baby Micah is cutting a canine first, which is not what the Internet says he is supposed to do.

My friend also just had a baby. She joked recently that she thinks we can’t remember the first years of our lives because those years are so terrible—having needs and not being able to communicate them, being overwhelmed absolutely all the time, waking up sometimes and your whole world feels different because you are different than you were yesterday. Also, teething. This is funny because it is a joke, but also not funny because my friend is a counselor with three children, so she would know.
To be fair, it seems like a lot of babies are really, really happy when they’re not really, really sad. But the fact remains that childhood is hard work from the very start…
